Mobile app or responsive website? When you really need an app

Many projects start by asking for an app, then find that a fast responsive website would have done the job for less. A quick way to decide:

User experience matters more than the platform
User experience matters more than the platform

You probably need an app if

  • Customers use the service often, daily or weekly.
  • You need push notifications or phone features like location and camera.
  • You run a subscription or loyalty model built on constant engagement.

A responsive website is probably enough if

  • Visits are occasional: search, buy, leave.
  • Google is your main source of customers.
  • Your budget is limited and you want to start quickly.

Tip: start with an excellent mobile website, and move to an app once demand is proven.
