Unlock PDF

Get a copy of your file that opens without a password, if you know the password.

Your files never leave your device: they are read and processed inside the browser.

How to unlock

1

Choose the protected file

Pick a PDF or drop it on the box; we tell you how it is protected.

2

Type the password

The open password, or the owner password if the file opens but has limits.

3

Download the unlocked copy

Press “Remove protection and download”.

Important: this tool does not crack or guess passwords: it needs the right password. Use it for your own files or files whose password you were given, like bank statements.

FAQ

I forgot the password. Can you open the file?

No. Files protected with modern encryption can’t be opened without the password. Ask whoever sent the file, or use your original unprotected copy.

The file opens but I can’t print or copy. What now?

The file has limits set with an owner password. Type the owner password to remove them. We don’t remove limits without the password, out of respect for the file owner’s rights.

My bank statement asks for a password. What is it?

Many banks use part of your ID number, date of birth or phone number, and say so in the message that came with it. Type it here once and keep a copy without the password.

Do you see my password?

No. Decryption runs inside your browser with the open-source qpdf engine; neither the file nor the password is sent anywhere.
