How zakat is calculated
Add up zakatable wealth
Cash, gold and silver at today's value, goods held for sale, shares held for trading, and money owed to you that you expect back.
Deduct debts due
Debts you owe that are due now come off the total, leaving your net wealth.
Compare with the nisab
If the net reaches the nisab and a year has passed, zakat is 2.5% of it, one fortieth.
Zakat on gold by karat
Jewellery gold isn't pure, so its pure gold content is the weight times the karat divided by 24.
| Karat | Pure gold | Weight equal to the 85 g nisab |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 100% | 85 g |
| 22K | 91.7% | 92.7 g |
| 21K | 87.5% | 97.1 g |
| 18K | 75% | 113.3 g |
What is zakat due on?
Cash. In the bank, in hand or in e-wallets, once it reaches the nisab and a year has passed.
Gold and silver. Bars, coins and savings. Worn jewellery is disputed; many Saudi scholars hold zakat is due on it.
Trade goods. Stock for sale at today's selling price. No zakat on premises, equipment or vehicles used in the business.
Shares. Trading shares at market value. Long-term investment shares have their own details; ask a scholar.
Zakat FAQ
How much is zakat?
One fortieth, that is 2.5% of zakatable wealth that reaches the nisab and has been held for a full lunar (Hijri) year. On SAR 100,000 the zakat is SAR 2,500.
What is the nisab?
The gold nisab is 85 grams of pure gold and the silver nisab is 595 grams of silver. Cash is measured against the value of one of them at today's price; the calculator shows both values in your currency.
Should cash nisab use gold or silver?
Scholars differ. Many hold that it should follow what benefits the poor most, which is silver because its nisab is worth less; others use gold. The calculator lets you choose; silver is the more cautious option.
How do I calculate zakat on 21 karat gold?
Multiply the weight by the karat and divide by 24 to get the pure gold weight, then multiply by the 24K gram price. 100 g of 21K contains 87.5 g of pure gold. Choose the karat in the calculator and it does this for you.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery that is worn?
Scholars differ. Many Saudi scholars hold that it is due once it reaches the nisab, while others say it is not. If you follow the first view, add its weight to the gold field.
Are debts deducted?
The calculator deducts debts due now, the view of many scholars. For long-term instalments, only the amount currently due is deducted.
How is zakat on trade goods calculated?
Value the goods held for sale at their market selling price when the year completes, add them to your cash, and pay 2.5% of the total if it reaches the nisab. Buildings and equipment used in the business are not zakatable.
