    How weighted grades work

    1

    Each item’s percent

Score ÷ points possible. 25 out of 30 is 83.33%.

    2

    Its share of the course

Percent × weight. 83.33% of a 30% item adds 25 points to the course.

    3

    Final exam needed

    (Target − points earned) ÷ final weight. For 90 with 52 of 60 earned: (90 − 52) ÷ 40 = 95%.

    Tips

Where do weights come from? Your syllabus lists them, for example homework 20%, midterms 40%, final 40%.

    Letter grades The common US scale here is A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, C+ 77, C 73, C- 70, D+ 67, D 63, D- 60; your school may differ.

Minimum on the final Some courses also require a minimum score on the final itself; check your syllabus.

    FAQ

What do I need on my final to pass?

Enter your current scores and the final’s weight, then set the target to your pass mark. You get the percentage needed on the final and what every final score from 50% to 100% would give you.

How do I enter a test marked out of 30?

Put its weight, your score and 30 in “out of”. The calculator turns it into a percentage before applying the weight.

What if my weights don’t add up to 100?

You get a warning. It can be fine when some items haven’t been graded yet: your current grade then uses only the graded weights.

Is this the same as a GPA calculator?

No. This works out one course out of 100. For your GPA across courses use the GPA Calculator.
