How your speed is measured
A word = 5 characters
Typing tests count every 5 characters, spaces included, as one word, so short and long words weigh the same.
Gross WPM
Characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes.
Net WPM
Gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes). That’s the big number in your result.
What does your score mean?
A rough guide we use for encouragement, not an official standard:
| Net speed | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 20 WPM | Beginner |
| 20 to 34 | Average |
| 35 to 49 | Good |
| 50 to 69 | Very fast |
| 70 and up | Professional |
Tips to type faster
Accuracy before speed Every error you leave is subtracted from your speed, so type calmly first.
Don’t look down Rest your fingers on the home row (F and J have bumps) and learn the keys by touch.
Practise a little daily A one-minute test a day is enough to see progress within weeks.
Privacy What you type is never sent anywhere or saved.
FAQ
How is WPM calculated?
Every 5 characters you type, including spaces, count as one word. We divide your characters by 5 and by the minutes, then subtract the errors you left uncorrected per minute.
Can I test my Arabic typing speed?
Yes. Pick Arabic: the texts have no diacritics, and an English comma or question mark is accepted for the Arabic ones.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes: type in the box under the text with your phone keyboard. Autocorrect is switched off in the box; if your phone still changes a word, fix it like any typo.
Why is my net speed lower than my gross speed?
Uncorrected errors are subtracted. Errors you fix while typing aren’t subtracted, but fixing them costs time.
Why can’t I paste?
Pasting and dropping text are blocked in the typing box so the result reflects your real typing.
