What saves the most?

SettingTypical savingEffect
128 or 64 colorsSmall to mediumHard to notice in graphics; photos may look grainy.
75% or 50% sizeLarge: 50% is about a quarter of the sizeThe image is smaller on screen.
Every 2nd frameAbout halfLess smooth motion, same duration.
How do we compress? We read every frame as it shows on screen, then write the GIF again: one color palette for the file, identical frames merged, and only the part of each frame that changed stored, with unchanged pixels transparent. We check the result is smaller than the original, or we don’t give it to you.

FAQ

How do I get a GIF under 1 MB?

Choose “Max file size”, then “1 MB”. We try fewer colors, then a smaller size, then fewer frames, and stop at the first result under 1 MB.

Does the speed change?

No. When frames are dropped their time is added to the frame that stays, so the total duration is the same.

Why didn’t my file get smaller?

Some GIFs are already well compressed. Lower the colors, size or frames. We never give you a file bigger than the original.

Is transparency kept?

Yes, transparent parts stay transparent.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Compression runs inside your browser; the file never leaves your device.
