WordPress SEO Saudi Arabia guide: settings, Arabic slugs and hreflang for bilingual sites

If you searched for WordPress SEO Saudi Arabia, you probably already run a WordPress site, or are about to, and want Google to read both its Arabic and English pages. This guide stays inside WordPress: the settings screens to check, how to configure one SEO plugin, Arabic or English slugs, connecting the two languages with hreflang, and a monthly routine. It cannot promise rankings. It removes the technical reasons a good site gets ignored.

Most WordPress SEO problems are settings, not secrets. A few screens in the dashboard decide what Google is allowed to see.

In short:

  • Check search engine visibility, permalinks and media attachment pages before anything else.
  • Run one SEO plugin, not two, and decide which archives deserve to be indexed.
  • WordPress stores Arabic slugs percent-encoded inside a 200-character limit. Keep them short, or use English slugs, and decide before launch.
  • Link every page to its translation and confirm in the page source that hreflang points both ways.
  • Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026. Put your schema effort into accurate business details.

  2. Configuring one SEO plugin
  3. Arabic or English slugs
  4. Two languages, hreflang and sitemaps

WordPress SEO in Saudi Arabia starts with five core settings

This guide assumes the build decisions are made. If you are still planning templates, navigation and URL structure, start with SEO-friendly web design: 15 build decisions. For how Google discovers and ranks a business in general, read how to get found on Google. Here we work inside the WordPress dashboard, starting with five screens that explain many "my site is not on Google" problems on sites someone else built.

Settings > General: site title and language

Many themes and SEO plugins append the site title to every page title, so write your business name the way customers search for it and replace any placeholder tagline. For an Arabic-first site, set the site language to Arabic so the theme loads its right-to-left layout; a multilingual plugin then manages the English pages.

Settings > Reading: search engine visibility

The box "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" is meant for staging copies. Since WordPress 5.3, ticking it adds a robots meta tag with noindex, nofollow to every page, and the built-in sitemap is switched off. WordPress notes that it is only a request: it does not block visitors, and search engines decide whether to honour it. Left ticked at launch, it asks Google to ignore your public site.

Settings > Permalinks: post name

The options are Plain (/?p=123), Day and name, Month and name, Numeric, Post name and a custom structure. For a business site, Post name gives short addresses such as /ac-maintenance/ without dates that age your content. Choose it before launch: changing the structure later changes every URL, and each old address then needs a redirect, as our website redesign checklist explains.

Media attachment pages

WordPress can give every uploaded image its own thin page. From version 6.4 these pages are disabled on new installs, but upgraded sites keep them on. If your site predates 6.4, open the attachment link of any image in the media library. If it shows a themed page rather than the image file, ask your developer to switch attachment pages off, or use your SEO plugin's setting if it has one.

Archives: categories, tags, authors and dates

WordPress creates an archive for every category, tag, author and month. On a business site with a small blog, most are thin lists of the same posts. Keep categories indexable only when each has its own introduction; set tags, date archives and, on single-author sites, author archives to noindex in your SEO plugin.

Configuring one SEO plugin: Yoast, Rank Math or similar

WordPress on its own gives you no field for a custom title and meta description on each page, which is the main reason to install an SEO plugin. Yoast SEO and Rank Math are two widely used options, and either suits a business site. What matters more is running exactly one. Two SEO plugins, or one plus a theme with its own SEO panel, produce duplicate titles, duplicate schema and competing sitemaps. Menus differ between plugins, but the decisions are the same:

SettingSuggested choiceWhy
Title templatePage title first, then a separator and the business nameSearchers scan for the topic; the brand can sit at the end
Home page title and descriptionWritten by hand, separately for each languageTemplates tend to produce "Home | Brand"
Category archivesIndexed only if each has its own introductionOtherwise thin lists that compete with real pages
Tags, date and author archivesNoindex (author archives on single-author sites)Near-duplicate lists of the same posts
XML sitemapOn, from the SEO plugin onlyOne sitemap to submit and monitor
Organisation detailsOfficial business name, logo and social profilesFeeds the site-wide schema the plugin outputs

Writing Arabic titles and descriptions

Google sets no character limit for titles; it truncates the title link to fit the device width, so the end may be cut. Put the service and city in the first few words and the business name last. Google also asks that the title use the same language and writing system as the page's main content. An Arabic page with an English or transliterated title invites Google to pick other text. Compare:

  • Weak: «الرئيسية | مؤسسة المثال» (says nothing about the service).
  • Better: «صيانة مكيفات في الرياض | مؤسسة المثال» (service, city, then brand).
  • English page: "AC maintenance in Riyadh | Example Est.", written for how English speakers search, not translated word for word.

Use the spelling your customers actually type, and keep variants for the body text. Write each language's meta description from scratch: one or two sentences on what you offer, where, and what to do next.

Arabic slugs or English slugs on WordPress?

When you publish an Arabic page, WordPress builds the slug from the Arabic title and percent-encodes every non-Latin character, stopping at 200 encoded characters. Each Arabic letter takes two bytes in UTF-8, so it becomes six characters in the stored slug, such as %D8%B5. Roughly 33 Arabic letters fill the limit, and a longer title is cut off without warning, sometimes mid-word.

Google has no problem with this. Its URL structure guidance uses an Arabic path as an example and recommends percent-encoding non-ASCII characters, which is what WordPress does. The friction is elsewhere: copied into WhatsApp or email, the link can turn into a long %D9%86%D8%B9... string that looks broken.

For most bilingual business sites we prefer short English slugs for both versions, with the language folder separating them. An Arabic-only site can keep Arabic slugs of two to four words. Either way, edit the slug in the page settings panel before publishing, removing filler words and dates. Once a page is indexed, leave its slug alone; if you must change it, add a 301 redirect the same day.

Arabic and English on one WordPress site: plugin, hreflang and sitemaps

A standard WordPress install handles one language. For Arabic and English together you need a multilingual plugin, such as Polylang or WPML, or a multisite network with one site per language; for a business site a plugin is usually simpler. Design and content for two languages are covered in our bilingual website design guide. Here is the SEO side.

Setting up the multilingual plugin

  1. Choose the URL pattern once. A language folder such as /en/ is the easiest to run on one hosting account and one Search Console property.
  2. Pick the default language. If most customers search in Arabic, put Arabic at the root.
  3. Create linked translations. Add the English version from the Arabic page's language panel, not as a separate page. That link lets the plugin output hreflang and send the language switcher to the matching page instead of the home page.
  4. Translate everything around the content: menus, footer, buttons, form labels, alt text, SEO title and description. An English page with an Arabic menu sends mixed signals.

Checking hreflang in five minutes

Open an Arabic service page, view the source and search for hreflang. You should find a line for the page itself with ar (or ar-SA), one for its English counterpart with en, both as full https:// addresses, and optionally an x-default. Then open the English page and confirm it points back; Google ignores annotations that are not reciprocal. Google treats hreflang in the HTML head, HTTP headers or the sitemap as equivalent, so one method is enough. It does not use hreflang or the lang attribute to detect a page's language; it reads the content. The full rule list is in decision 14 of our SEO-friendly web design article.

Sitemaps and Search Console for each language

Since version 5.5, WordPress publishes a sitemap index at /wp-sitemap.xml, with up to 2,000 URLs per sitemap, and references it in robots.txt. SEO plugins usually replace it. Yoast SEO, for example, disables the core sitemap, serves its own index at /sitemap_index.xml and leaves out any page with a noindex directive. Open your sitemap index and check that only one system is active, that pages in both languages appear, and that thank-you pages and noindexed archives are absent.

In Search Console, a Domain property, verified by a DNS record, covers every protocol, subdomain and path. To see the English site on its own, add a URL-prefix property for https://yourdomain.com/en/, or filter the Performance report by page. Watching each language separately shows quickly when one version stops being indexed.

Schema and local signals for businesses in Saudi Arabia

Part of your structured data is already there. Yoast documents that its plugin outputs a connected JSON-LD graph on every page describing the WebPage, the WebSite and the Organization (or a Person), extended with types such as Article and BreadcrumbList where they apply. Fill in the organisation details in the plugin, and do not add a second schema plugin that outputs another Organization block.

Adding LocalBusiness details

For a business with premises or a service area, LocalBusiness markup on the home or contact page is the most useful addition. Google requires the business name and address, recommends telephone with the country code, url, openingHoursSpecification and geo, and asks for the most specific type available, such as Restaurant. Two details trip up Saudi sites:

  • Days of the week stay in English. Google supports only the standard schema.org values for opening hours, in English, even on an Arabic page. A Sunday-to-Thursday week is marked up as Sunday, Monday and so on, while the visible page shows Arabic day names.
  • Mark up only what visitors can see. Address, phone and hours in the schema should match the page and your Google Business Profile exactly. Update all three together before Ramadan and Eid hours change.

Check whether your SEO plugin can output LocalBusiness markup; if not, a developer can add a JSON-LD block to the contact page template. Test it with Google's Rich Results Test, and keep expectations modest: Google does not guarantee that features using structured data will appear.

What changed for FAQ markup

Many WordPress tutorials still recommend FAQ schema for extra space in the results. That advice is out of date. Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites in 2023, announced that the feature would no longer appear in Google Search from 7 May 2026, and removed its FAQ documentation in June 2026. Keep FAQ sections that help visitors, but there is no Search reason to install a plugin for FAQ markup.

Local searches are tied to a place. Keep your business name, address and phone identical on the contact page, in the schema and on your Google Business Profile.

Where the Google Business Profile fits

For map results and "near me" searches, your Google Business Profile does most of the work, outside WordPress. Your site backs it up: the same details in plain text, a contact page that loads fast on a phone, and the profile's website link pointing to the language most of your customers use. Setup and verification are covered in our guide to the Google Business Profile in Saudi Arabia.

WordPress speed: caching, images and hosting

The Core Web Vitals targets and the layout choices behind them are in our SEO-friendly web design article. On WordPress, four levers decide most of the result:

One caching layer

Use either your host's built-in page cache or one caching plugin, never two, and clear it after every change so you test the real page.

Images sized before upload

Resize photos to their display size and export as WebP. WordPress has supported AVIF since 6.5 where the server's image library does; check Tools > Site Health > Info > Media Handling.

A light theme and fonts

Every plugin and page-builder widget adds code. Arabic fonts carry many more glyphs than Latin ones, so use one family that covers both scripts, in two or three weights.

Hosting that keeps up

A supported PHP version and enough server resources for busy seasons. No plugin compensates for an overloaded server.

Measure the home page and main service page in PageSpeed Insights on mobile, then follow the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console. Speed also decides whether visitors stay, as we explain in why website speed drives sales.

A monthly WordPress SEO routine, and the mistakes it catches

Updates change settings, staff publish pages with long slugs, and a hosting migration can copy a staging setting onto the live site. One hour a month catches most of it. Backups, form tests and renewals are in our website maintenance checklist; this routine covers the SEO side only.

Mistakes that hurt Arabic WordPress sites

The staging box survives launch

"Discourage search engines" stays ticked, or returns when a staging database is copied over the live one. Our website launch checklist puts this check on launch day.

Arabic slugs cut in half

A long Arabic title becomes a slug truncated at 200 encoded characters, ending mid-word.

Unlinked translations

English pages created as separate pages: no hreflang, and a switcher that drops visitors on the home page.

English labels on Arabic pages

Theme strings such as "Home" and "Read more" left untranslated, mixing languages in what Google reads.

FAQ

Should I use Yoast SEO or Rank Math?

Either works for a business site. Pick the one your developer knows, configure it properly, and never run two SEO plugins at once. The settings you choose matter far more than the plugin.

Are Arabic URLs bad for SEO?

No. Google handles percent-encoded Arabic URLs and uses Arabic in its own examples. The downsides are practical: shared links can look like encoded strings, and WordPress cuts Arabic slugs at about 33 letters.

Do I need hreflang on an Arabic and English WordPress site?

It is worth having. hreflang tells Google which pages are translations of each other, so it can show each searcher the right language. Link pages as translations in your multilingual plugin, then confirm in the source that each page lists itself and its counterpart.

Why is my WordPress site not showing on Google?

Check Settings > Reading first: if "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" is ticked, every page asks to be left out. Then inspect the home page in Search Console and submit your sitemap. A new site may simply need time.

Does FAQ schema still work in 2026?

Not in Google Search. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results from 7 May 2026. FAQ sections still help readers, but the markup no longer earns extra space in results.

Summary

Good WordPress SEO for a Saudi business is mostly careful setup. Untick the staging visibility box, choose post-name permalinks, switch off attachment pages and thin archives, and let one SEO plugin manage titles, the sitemap and base schema. Keep slugs short and fix them before launch. Link every Arabic page to its English translation, confirm hreflang in the source, and watch each language in Search Console. Add accurate LocalBusiness details instead of chasing FAQ markup, keep the site light, and give it an hour a month.
